The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), explained

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is how you get paid for the surplus solar electricity you send back to the grid. It is one of the things that makes solar add up, but it is also widely misunderstood, so here is a clear, honest run-through.

What the SEG actually is

Since 2020, larger electricity suppliers must offer SEG tariffs that pay you for each unit (kWh) of electricity you export. You need an eligible, usually MCS-certified, system and a meter that can measure export, normally a smart meter. The export payment is separate from, and on top of, the money you save by using your own solar.

How export rates work

SEG rates are set by each supplier and vary quite a bit; some are fixed, others variable. You do not have to buy your import electricity from the same company you export to, so it is worth comparing. Figures are indicative and vary by roof, energy use and tariff. We never quote a guaranteed export income, because it depends on your tariff and how much you actually export.

Self-consumption beats export

Here is the point most sales pitches skip: you almost always earn more by using your own solar than by exporting it, because import prices are higher than export rates. The smartest setup uses as much generation as possible at home, then exports the rest for SEG credit. A battery or hot-water diverter can shift more usage onto your own power.

Choosing an SEG tariff

Look at the rate, whether it is fixed or variable, any conditions, and whether switching import supplier affects it. It is a smaller piece of the overall economics than self-consumption, so do not let a headline export rate drive the whole decision.

How Sunready helps

Our free check gives you an indicative picture of generation and likely self-consumption for your roof, and we match you with vetted MCS-certified installers who set systems up to be SEG-eligible. We do not sell the system and we do not inflate the numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a smart meter for SEG?

Usually yes, because SEG payments are based on measured export, which a smart meter or export meter provides. Your installer and supplier can confirm what you need.

Can I export without solar panels?

SEG is for export from eligible generation like solar. A battery alone, charged from the grid, is not generating export in the SEG sense, though it can still save money on a time-of-use tariff.

Is SEG income taxable?

For most domestic households it is not a concern, but if you are unsure, especially for a business, check with a qualified accountant. We are not tax advisers.
